Take note too of the fish stew in the upstairs dining room. Otherwise The Cow is mostly about conviviality in the saloon bar below, which is an old-school fixture — children out by 5pm, for example — to be enjoyed readily"

" This beloved Notting Hill pub is renowned for its perfect-serve Guinness and A-list clientele (Tom Cruise and David Beckham have been known to sink a few pints here). The pub’s slogan is ‘eat heartily and give the house a good name’, which tells you everything you need to know about it. Housed in a heritage building from the 19th century, the ground-floor bar says traditional Irish saloon, while red-lino flooring and old Guinness adverts live alongside perfectly pressed tablecloths and original David Hockney and Patrick Caulfield artworks in the compact upstairs dining room. On a Sunday, as well as the usual à la carte menu, roast beef is always on the specials board."

"Tom Conran’s (of Conran family fame) pub on Westbourne Park Road is legendary – and the beef and ale pies and pints of prawns are almost as celebrated as its regulars. One-time neighbour Stella McCartney has held many a party here; David Beckham and Tom Cruise have washed down oysters with Guinness – and there’s a cheerfully scruffy feel to the place, even if the upstairs restaurant’s recent makeover managed to smarten things up a tad. The bar area is always packed, and there’s a small pavement terrace that drinkers spill out onto on warmer evenings."
