"4* | 60 rooms Try as it might, this town just can’t shake its reputation for aesthetic conservatism — but XV Beacon, Boston’s original luxury boutique hotel, is proof that well-worn tradition and contemporary boutique style can go comfortably hand in hand. The name is the address: 15 Beacon Street, a block from Boston Common, at one end of the city’s posh Beacon Hill neighborhood. What’s behind the cast-iron façade of this turn-of-the-century Beaux Arts building could easily have been a perfectly uptight, perfectly conventional New England luxury hotel — instead it’s possessed of a certain dark elegance, and an atmosphere that’s both romantic and a little bit Romantic. The rooms moderate the extravagance of the lobby somewhat, and lighten the palette to incorporate some soothing white, gray, and cream. The furniture is inspired more by lavish Parisian luxury than the more austere local tradition, and the Italian marble bathrooms, with their heated towel racks and rain showers are pitch-perfect. Frette linens and robes are among the most conspicuous tactile luxuries, as are the cashmere throws and gas fireplaces. And while the heart of downtown Boston has no shortage of fine restaurants, one of them is right downstairs: the extravagantly named Mooo…. is an upscale modern steakhouse with an award-winning chef, a full bar, a capacious wine list, and a delightful private dining room in the vaulted wine cellar."
