"“In a parallel universe where turkey twizzlers don’t exist, this is the kinda food I wish I grew up eating. It feels strangely like I already did. It’s all so familiar. Walking into the gardens of an old school it feels as if you’ve already been there a thousand times. Like meeting yourself in another life. It’s homely. I always leave feeling as if I’ve eaten amongst friends even when out for lunch alone. It’s a place where I feel safe in whatever menu choices I decide on. As well as never ending banging menu (lunch and dinner), the wine list is always a winner and the negronis are strong as an ox. I go for something fried, something salad-y, a fish and a potatoes pretty much every time. That said I massively over order and take some home for midnight feasting so it’s a win/win. I have an awful lot of time for Rochelle and a deep place in my heart for it always.”"

"Margot Henderson’s awfully well known hidden treasure is a dinky, discreet restaurant located in the bike shed of a former school. Inside, things are prettily low-key, with white walls and jugs of flowers on the tables; on warm days, snap up the sought-after spaces in the allotment-cum-yard. The short daily menu deals in simple seasonal fare such as grilled sardines and tomato, braised rabbit with potato and anchovy or onglet with caponata. This is heart-and-soul dining that should really cost more – not that we’re complaining."

"In a neighbourhood increasingly overwhelmed by mammon – vertiginous developments, private members clubs, throbbing hotel bars – a last redoubt holds indomitably on to the Shoreditch values of the recent past: artiness, eccentricity, a wilful withdrawal from the mainstream melee. It is the Rochelle Canteen, a delightful little restaurant housed in an old bike shed on the glorious Boundary Estate, the site of London's first social housing. Effectively the staff canteen for local artists, the Rochelle isn't exactly easy to find but the destination justifies the journey. The space is English modern: understated and egalitarian, with Ercol everywhere. And the food fits right in. Owners Melanie Arnold and Margot Henderson's approach is direct and honest without fetishising its simplicity. The menu changes all the time but we had a sublimely seasoned steak tartare, and deep and rich fish stew with chickpeas and rouille. "
