"Just lovely… RC is in a lovely spot tucked behind Columbia Road in the nicest part of Shoreditch (all surrounded by redbrick mansion blocks). The restaurant itself is tucked in the garden of what used to be a school and is now a modern art “complex” (not sure what that means - but the crowd is undoubtedly achingly cool). A short-ish menu of all delicious sounding things and, sure enough, everything I ate was indeed delicious. As you might expect, the wine list features quite a few of the (excellent and fairly priced) St John wines. Most of the tables are in a sort of permanent tent/ greenhouse annex and it was slightly chilly when I ate there in mid-March - but they do provide blankets and as soon as the sun came out it warmed up nicely. And the ambience and service were all very warm. All in all - a fantastic restaurant. I’d been meaning to come here for ages and so glad I finally did. Highly recommend. "

"“In a parallel universe where turkey twizzlers don’t exist, this is the kinda food I wish I grew up eating. It feels strangely like I already did. It’s all so familiar. Walking into the gardens of an old school it feels as if you’ve already been there a thousand times. Like meeting yourself in another life. It’s homely. I always leave feeling as if I’ve eaten amongst friends even when out for lunch alone. It’s a place where I feel safe in whatever menu choices I decide on. As well as never ending banging menu (lunch and dinner), the wine list is always a winner and the negronis are strong as an ox. I go for something fried, something salad-y, a fish and a potatoes pretty much every time. That said I massively over order and take some home for midnight feasting so it’s a win/win. I have an awful lot of time for Rochelle and a deep place in my heart for it always.”"

"Margot Henderson’s awfully well known hidden treasure is a dinky, discreet restaurant located in the bike shed of a former school. Inside, things are prettily low-key, with white walls and jugs of flowers on the tables; on warm days, snap up the sought-after spaces in the allotment-cum-yard. The short daily menu deals in simple seasonal fare such as grilled sardines and tomato, braised rabbit with potato and anchovy or onglet with caponata. This is heart-and-soul dining that should really cost more – not that we’re complaining."

"In a neighbourhood increasingly overwhelmed by mammon – vertiginous developments, private members clubs, throbbing hotel bars – a last redoubt holds indomitably on to the Shoreditch values of the recent past: artiness, eccentricity, a wilful withdrawal from the mainstream melee. It is the Rochelle Canteen, a delightful little restaurant housed in an old bike shed on the glorious Boundary Estate, the site of London's first social housing. Effectively the staff canteen for local artists, the Rochelle isn't exactly easy to find but the destination justifies the journey. The space is English modern: understated and egalitarian, with Ercol everywhere. And the food fits right in. Owners Melanie Arnold and Margot Henderson's approach is direct and honest without fetishising its simplicity. The menu changes all the time but we had a sublimely seasoned steak tartare, and deep and rich fish stew with chickpeas and rouille. "
@ronzaum
"A firm favourite on the Boundary Estate block since Melanie Arnold and Margot Henderson opened it in the former bike shed of the old Rochelle School in 2004. It’s classy and classic, drawing local creatives and food industry heads alike (Fergus Henderson, husband of Margot, can often be spotted at one of the pretty courtyard tables). The British/European menu, which changes daily, is “small, perfectly formed, ready to please all stomachs”: duck rillettes with cornichons, white asparagus with bottarga butter or a grilled mackerel with a cucumber salad might feature."
@
"Seasonal, daily-changing menu. Simple food and good atmosphere"
@
"We have never, ever, had a bad meal at Rochelle Canteen. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Parents, friends, exes. Eggs, cod’s roe, pie, or poached pear. Summer, winter, and all the rest. Importantly, maybe most importantly, Rochelle Canteen is a restaurant that takes you out of London. Whilst keeping you in London. That escapism is something everyone needs once in a while. You make your reservation and then you enter a walled garden filled with cabernet sauvignon, buttery new potatoes, and stylish strangers."

"Rochelle Canteen is a brilliant British restaurant in a quiet square off the high street, with some of the most solid cooking in town. You’ll find it by wandering into Arnold Circus and looking for a small blue door marked ‘Rochelle School’. Ring the buzzer for the canteen and you’ll enter a hidden garden with a path leading to the restaurant itself. The menu is excellent (everything from a simple soup to a roast is fantastic) but the feeling of discovery is a huge part of Rochelle Canteen’s appeal. While the restaurant is known mostly for lunch service, it also opens in the evenings closer to the weekend, so you don’t have to take a day off to experience it."

"Hidden within a school courtyard, this canteen excels in simple yet delicious seasonal recipes"
@solost
" Rochelle Canteen, run by Margot Henderson and Melanie Arnold, has long been one of London’s favourite spots. Housed in a former school bike shed on Arnold Circus in Shoreditch, accessible only through an unmarked door that, when buzzed in, leads you through a pretty garden and to a small dining room, it’s always been a hidden spot for Londoners to enjoy. Aside from being an excellent setting to enjoy a leisurely weekend lunch, the cooking is really quite good too. Simplicity is the order of the day and although menus change daily we can highly recommend the Queenie scallops, grilled in garlic and butter; the skate wing with burnt butter and samphire; and our favourite, the incredible braised lamb with peas and mint.
