"West Wittering near Chichester is one of the most beautiful beaches on the south coast. To lose the crowds, head up the long sandy isthmus of East Head and find a paradise of silver dunes and green marram grass dotted with rolling hollows in which you can stretch out and listen to the skylarks singing overhead. Eventually you reach an anchorage for small sailing boats. Here the beach shelves deeply, making for good swimming, while at low tide the mud flats create wonderful natural slides. By far the best way to reach the Witterings is to take the train, with a bike, and then ride along the brilliant new 11-mile Salterns rural cycle route from Chichester train station. Dedicated paths cross wheat fields, passing flint-walled cottages and waterways covered in lilypads, before arriving at the dunes."
