"In 1515 the jurist and capitoul Béringuier Maynier acquired a 15th century hotel which used to be part of the large plot of the Hôtel Dahus. On a new dwelling framed by two stair towers extended by two short wings (first span of the current wings), he placed numerous windows richly adorned with pilasters, candelabra and foliage. Medallion busts decorate the great staircase tower while a Latin motto is engraved on the lintel of the door: VIVITUR INGENIO CETERA MORTIS ERUNT, ("We live by the spirit, everything else belongs to the dead "). In the hotel, a ceremonial fireplace honors the owner's great humanist culture, its decor is an apology for fortune, abundance and fertility. In 1547, the parliamentarian Jean de Burnet acquired the Hôtel de Béringuier Maynier. Between 1547 and 1577 he enlarged the main courtyard and gave it a square shape with the extension of the wings (beyond the first bay). It is closed by a portico whose Doric columns and brick-stone alternation are inspired by the loggia of Assézat. Between 1580 and 1591, Bishop Pierre de Lancrau, who had become the owner, had the great staircase tower raised and several windows built in Atlantis11. In the courtyard, some Atlantean windows on the first floor could date from the second campaign of work and be by Nicolas Bachelier, those on the ground floor would be from the third campaign (end of the 16th century)."
