"The Red House Museum can’t be missed, standing out in the town center. This architectural monument is open to the public to show how life once was in the 18th century. Inside you are greeted with the most beautiful spiral staircase over 3 floors. Within the house you will see the gorgeous wallpaper, brass objects inside kitchen cabinets and rich tapestries within the bedrooms. --------------------------- Rotes Haus (Red House), the former headquarters of the textile-industrialist Scheibler family and now a museum, is the most famous landmark in Monschau. While the 18th-century red brick house stands out from the half-timbered buildings around it, its simple exterior does not give any indication of the castle-like lavishness of its interior. The museum is done in luxurious Rococo, Louis XVI, and Empire-style furnishings, and boasts antique and valuable pieces of furniture, tapestry, and artifacts. However, what steals the show is the self-supporting oak staircase that winds up three floors and depicts various stages of textile production. ------------------------------------------- Would you like to take a look behind the scenes of how the upper middle class lived in the 18th century? Then you should definitely visit the red house. For 5 euros per person you can visit the whole house. It was built around 1760 by a textile manufacturer and merchant. The house consists of 4 floors connected by a beautiful wooden staircase. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Not far from the red house hidden in a narrow street, you can find a trail up hill. It is marked with a sign of panorama route. It’s a small climb that takes about 15 minutes to the highest point. There you have a beautiful panoramic view over the old city centre and the castle. ---------------------------------------------------Former home of the Scheibler, an entrepreneurial noble family, a pretty shade of red had rendered the name to their home office and they had once been famous cloth merchants of Europe. Fabric produced by them had been renowned throughout the continent and their potential clients had always been presented with books filled with small clippings of their cloth. The Red House had been recently turned into a small private museum and it had been just another interesting thing to do in Monschau. The Red House is open for public and has an entrance fee of 3€ per adult. The late 18th century mansion has many interesting things to look at, out of which the massive wooden staircase is the most stunning. Winding all the way up to the 8th floor, the staircase is embellished with original wooden carvings which depict exact steps taken in order to process fine cloth. These guidelines were given to the artisans by the owner of the factory and the house, Karl Wilhelm Schiebler."
