La sua storia e fama lo ha reso anche uno dei più esclusivi e costosi luoghi in cui vivere nell’Upper East Side. Il Dakota Building fu fatto costruire da Edward S. Clark, il creatore dell’azienda produttrice delle famosissime macchine da cucire Singer. Edward S. Clark affidò il progetto all’architetto Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, molto conosciuto in quegli anni a New York per la realizzazione del Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Hardenbergh a inizio Novecento disegnerà anche il Plaza Hotel. Il palazzo di Clark sin da subito si fece riconoscere per la sua innovazione ed eccentricità: l’area di costruzione nel 1880 era pressoché disabitata e non sviluppata. Secondo alcuni il nome Dakota, che nell’immaginario collettivo americano è un posto remoto e distante, fu dato al palazzo proprio per dire che l’edificio era lontano da ciò che ai tempi era considerato il centro di New York; in quell’epoca solo le persone di bassa estrazione sociale vivevano negli appartamenti, mentre i ricchi e i nobili prediligevano imponenti dimore a sé stanti. Costruire un palazzo di 10 piani con numerosi appartamenti per le classi benestanti era quindi inusuale e quasi un azzardo. lo stile architettonico scelto, un mix fra neoclassico e neogotico, era certamente sui generis. Come arrivarci Con la metro: la fermata della metro di New York 72nd Street è servita dalle linee A, B, C e ti lascia proprio davanti al Dakota Building e a uno degli ingressi di Central Park. All’interno della stazione potrai anche ammirare l’opera d’arte intitolata SKY di Yoko Ono, un mosaico in ceramica realizzato dall’artista nel 2018. Con l’autobus: proprio davanti al Dakota Building su Central Park West c’è la fermata dell’autobus della linea M10. La fermata si chiama Central Park West/West 72nd Street. Altrimenti puoi prendere l’autobus M72 e scendere alla fermata West 72 Street/Columbus Avenue."

"Completed in 1884 John Lennon and Yoko Ono owned an apartment on the 7th floor from the corner of CPW and 72nd. It went along CPW and 72nd. They then bought the apartment next door overlooking West 72nd Street to the center of the building. They did not own the apartment next to that as that was owned by Roberta Flack. Yoko Ono says she saw Lennon's ghost there. She saw her husband's ghost sitting at his white piano. She says he told her, "Don't be afraid, I am still with you". When he was alive, Lennon told Ono he saw a 'crying lady ghost' in the building. The Beatles musician told his wife he had seen the ghost roaming the halls. Additionally, Judy Garland, Lauren Bacall, Jason Robards, Leonard Bernstein, Lillian Gish, Rosemary Clooney, Jose Ferrer, Boris Karloff, Carroll O’Connor (Archie Bunker from “All in the Family”), Rudolf Nureyev, Gilda Radner, author Harlan Coben, U2's Bono, Rex Reed, Jack Palance, Lillian Gish, Connie Chung, Maury Povich... these are just some of the celebs who have called the Dakota home. Notable celebrities who have been rejected by The Dakota co-op board include Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas, Cher, Billy Joel, Madonna, Carly Simon, Alex Rodriguez, Judd Apatow, and Tea Leoni."

The Dakota offered many amenities, such as porters, maids, room service, a formal dining room, and electricity provided by an in-house generator. There were 65 apartments, ranging in size from 4 rooms to 20. Throughout its history, The Dakota has been famous as the home of many celebrities, including John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
