"Since it opened in 1930, The Carlyle has become something more than the sum of its extremely alluring parts, a living legend that embodies, if not the spirit of New York City, at least one of her spirits: her brightest, most sparkling, most elegant self; witty, worldly and nostalgic. An entire movie has been made about this property—Always at The Carlyle—in which present-day tribal elders such as George Clooney, Sofia Coppola, Wes Anderson, and Naomi Campbell discuss their fondness for the joint. Broadly speaking, the rooms get better the higher the floor. Plus, you get to spend more time in the elevators—not an activity to enjoy in everyday life, but this is not everyday life. The ones at The Carlyle are the stuff of legend, as much admired as the astounding Dorothy Draper lobby or Bemelmans Bar. Imagine if you had been there when Princess Diana, Michael Jackson, and Steve Jobs all piled in (true story). You would have been in awe. Not of them, of course, but of the real superstar—the unflappable, icy-calm, white-gloved Carlyle elevator operator."

"Just saying the words “Meet me at Bemelmans for a drink” makes me feel instantly more sophisticated. There are few acts that so capture a certain sepia-tinted version of New York City as sitting in that dimly lit bar at The Carlyle (preferably on a rainy night), sipping a martini with a twist while listening to Earl Rose bring home “Begin the Beguine” on the piano. This hotel has always been different, ever since it opened in 1930, starting with its location on the quiet corner of 76th and Madison, just off Central Park and a short walk from the Met—20 blocks north of the transactional hubbub of Midtown, where most of the competition can be found. But while it has always been a class act, The Carlyle has never felt uptight. Take Ludwig Bemelmans’s whimsical murals on the walls of his namesake bar, which depict Madeline, a character from his beloved children’s books. This place has seen ebullient Alan Cumming performances and intimate Debbie Harry gigs; Mick Jagger allegedly still keeps a residence for when he’s in town. The Carlyle probably could have happily kept on as it was, but last fall the hotel beautifully redid 155 of its 189 rooms and suites. There’s lots of texture and shine—mirrored hallways, brass and black-lacquer wall panelings—but butterfly-shaped doorknobs and bouclé-upholstered armchairs keep things from feeling too slick. The hotel also recently debuted a new restaurant, Dowling’s, that throws back to the 1940s with dishes like steak Diane, carving carts, and table side flambé, as well as a new spa by luxe Swiss brand Valmont. "Comme le Ritz à Paris ou le Claridge à Londres, le Carlyle ne s'exhibe ni ne s'affiche. Son vrai luxe réside dans la discrétion. Ce n'est pas un lieu de grand passage comme le Plaza. On n'y vient pas pour se montrer mais pour s'y cacher, et c'est bien ce qu'avait compris Kennedy qui avait choisi d'y descendre lors de ses passages à New York (le président occupait l'appartement d'un ami au dernier étage et, selon la légende, il faussait compagnie à ses gardes du corps en se cachant derrière de grosses lunettes noires pour aller, en short, faire ses courses sur Madison Avenue). La légende dit qu'il y venait également avec Marilyn Monroe. Les mesures de sécurité sont restées et les personnalités continuent de descendre incognito dans l'hôtel le plus select de New York. Depuis l'ouverture de l'hôtel en 1930, l'entrée en laque noire du Carlyle a vu défiler quelques têtes royales et présidentielles et bien des membres de cette secte qu'on appelle en Amérique les seriously rich . Dès l'entrée, les décorations murales intriguent et séduisent. On va de surprise en surprise en matière de mobilier, essentiellement du Louis XV (à un grand renfort de touches modernes qui créent de subtiles combinaisons). L'édifice compte parmi les plus élevés de l'Upper East Side et la plupart des chambres jouissent d'une vue extraordinaire sur Central Park et le nord de Manhattan. Chaque chambre, il y en a 188, disposent bien sûr de tout le confort : lit king size , télévision plasma etc. L'hôtel, qui comprend un Spa, un salon de coiffures, une salle de gym et un restaurant cossu réputé pour ses brunchs dominicaux, abrite également le bar Bemelmans, décoré des illustrations du dessinateur éponyme, ainsi que le bar de jazz Carlyle où s'est produit chaque soir pendant plus de 30 ans le légendaire chanteur noir Bobby Short. On y joue toujours du jazz plusieurs soirs par semaine. Deux institutions de New York..."
