"Jean de Bernuy arrived in Toulouse from Spain in 1499 and quickly became a major international player in the pastel trade. It was in 1502 that he began to build his mansion, first with a small Gothic courtyard where he had a large staircase tower built in 1504 by the mason Merigo Cayla. Particular care is taken in this tower: flamboyant guardrail, numerous gargoyles, stone trunk at the base of the turret, windows bent on the corner, medallions (today very damaged) above the windows, and a high room under the terrace. The street frontage is in keeping with the Flamboyant Gothic tradition with its curved portal and curly cabbages. After having commissioned a first campaign of works in 1502, leading in particular to the erection of the Gothic staircase tower, around 1530 it was to the architect Louis Privat that Jean de Bernuy entrusted the construction of a new courtyard where extensively developed the language of the Renaissance. Medallion portraits of the owners dominate the courtyard and the visitor. On the upper gallery, the windows present, for the first time in Toulouse, Corinthian columns, the design of which is taken from an architectural treatise. Long columns-candelabra give an exceptional monumentality to the courtyard, the prestige of which is further enhanced by the abundant use of stone, a luxurious material in Toulouse due to its rarity and its price on the local market, which displays the wealth of the owner."
