"This 200-acre (80-hectare) estate has a wonderful old-world feel—in his heyday, Robert Louis Stevenson was a regular. Schramsberg is the label presidents serve when toasting international dignitaries, and there’s plenty of memorabilia in the front room to prove it. But the real mystique begins when you enter the 21⁄2-mile (4km) aging caves—reputedly North America’s longest—which were hand-carved by Chinese laborers in the 1800s. The free tour ends in a charming tasting room where you sit around a big table and sample varied selections of bubbly."
