"Mid century motel - trendy"
@
"This creatively charged hideout is a reminder of a time before the billionaires and Hollywood megawatts moved in, when Byron Bay was simply a groovy surf town. First-time hoteliers Jess and Dave Frid have revitalised the roadside property with help from their friends, a motley mix of local makers and designers, resulting in something that feels more like a thrumming artistic hub than a motel. The pair took their cues from the kaleidoscopic Flamingo Estate in Los Angeles and infused it with a retro vibe – lots of wicker, terrazzo, bold colours and chubby Seventies-style furniture – but there’s also a sharp focus on sustainability. The Flintstones-like crazy paving entrance was made from salvaged tiles; an old brick wall is now the fireplace in the library; all the kitchens in the six family-size bungalows were crafted from repurposed timber panels; and each of the 12 rooms in the main building has countertops made from waste concrete. Outside, the original kidney-shaped pool remains, flanked by an open-air tiki bar, but instead of cocktails everyone is drinking biodynamic wine from interesting small producers. Sleek sports cars and bulging station wagons are parked side by side, and children from road-tripping young families run and play next to sunbathing couples. It’s moments from Tallow Beach and a 10-minute drive to town, but the location doesn’t really matter, because this is the destination. FLASH POINT Cheap and cheerful isn’t a phrase much associated with Byron Bay any more, but here – at its coolest address – it’s a badge of honour. Doubles from about £155."
