"Opened in 1865, made from land reclaimed from the River Thames as part of the development of the Victoria Embankment, it was considered at that time to be the finest thoroughfare in Europe. The Thames used to be closer and in one corner of the park stands the historical Watergate, built in 1626 as an entrance to the Thames for the Duke of Buckingham. There are several statues in the park, a memorial to the poet Robert Burns and war memorials commemorating the Second World War and the newest for Iraq and Afghanistan."
