"Named after Spanish Rabbi R Yitzchok Abuhav (of Castile, although he never made it to Israel, the Spanish jews that established the shul came here with a Torah written by him, it is considered very holy and is only used on Rosh hashana Yom Kippur and shavuos. Also in this shul is Torah written by the Sofer of the Arizal Shlomo Ochana (he has written many famous teffilin that many rabanim have worn and wear throughout the centuries. The shul was built in late 1500s but was almost completely destroyed in 1837 earthquake, except for Aron kodesh and part of Southern wall. The Bima has six steps representing the six working days of the week; the top level is seventh, representing Shabbos. Some legends say that R Yitzchok Abuhav instructed them in Spain how to design and consruct the shul and they did so uppon arriving here There is many paintings of pictures throughout the Shul, and actually many Rabanim of Tzfas write Teshuvos of this issue if pictures are allowed to be painted in a shul"
