"Created in 1948 by Italian-Brazilian Francisco Matarazzo Sobrinho (Ciccillo Matarazzo) and his wife Yolanda Penteado, the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art, it was one of the first institutional seats of modernist artistic production in the country. The museum model was that of New York's MoMA, which had given instructions and works for the new foundation. The general statutes of the new MAM provided for the constitution of an entity dedicated to encouraging the artistic taste of the public, in whatever manner deemed convenient, in the field of fine arts, music, literature and art in general. The history of MAM-SP is marked by several changes of headquarters and direction. In 1958 he went to Ibirapuera Park, where was the pavilion of the Biennial. Francisco Matarazzo, who was also the founder of the São Paulo Biennial Foundation, decides to separate the two correlated institutions in 1963. Paulo Mendes de Almeida and Mário Pedrosa started the "new MAM" and attested in the first article of the minutes: “The São Paulo Museum of Modern Art, a non-profit civil society, political or religious, aims to constitute a collection of arts modern plastics, mainly Brazilian, encourage and disseminate contemporary art ”. The collection now has more than 5,000 pieces, most produced by active Brazilian artists from the 1960s onwards. It maintains the Sculpture Garden, a space of 6,000 square meters designed by Roberto Burle Marx, where works of the open air collection are exhibited. It has one of the largest specialized art libraries in the city of São Paulo, with over 60,000 volumes, as well as its own publishing sector, responsible for catalogs editing and the quarterly magazine Moderno. Since 1969 he has organized the biennial Panorama of Brazilian Current Art Panorama, one of the most traditional periodical exhibitions in the country and an important tool for expanding the collection. "

"Une référence en matière d'art moderne. Le MAM organise toute l'année des expositions temporaires mettant en scène le résultat du travail de divers artistes nationaux ou étrangers, réalisés sur des supports multiples (peinture, photographie, sculptures...). L'expo n'est en revanche pas très grande, on a vite fait le tour. Également sur place une boutique, une bibliothèque et un bar-restaurant."
