"Mapstr Title: The Summit at Big Bend — Terlingua, Texas The Summit at Big Bend is a standout glamping-style stay near Terlingua/Study Butte, one of the most practical gateway areas for exploring the west side of Big Bend National Park. It is the kind of place you save less for a traditional hotel experience and more for the setting: desert silence, wide-open views, rugged mountains in the distance, dramatic sunsets, and some of the darkest night skies in the country. The property offers several types of unique stays, including glamping domes, stargazing domes, casas, and luxury cave rooms. Their “Super Stargazing Domes” are designed with a stargazing portal, and the luxury cave rooms are promoted as modern cave-style suites with amenities like running water, mini fridge, coffee maker, and backup generator power. Why it is worth saving: this is a strong Big Bend lodging pick if you want the desert experience to continue after your park day ends. Instead of staying in a generic motel, you get a more memorable basecamp with views, quiet, stars, and a sense of place. It fits especially well for couples, photographers, stargazers, or anyone wanting a “remote but comfortable” Big Bend trip. Location-wise, this is very useful for Big Bend because the Maverick Entrance Station is close to Study Butte and Terlingua; the National Park Service describes it as just inside the western boundary of the park and close to those towns. Staying near Terlingua gives good access to the west side of the park, but you will still do a lot of driving once inside. Plan full days, carry water, fuel up before long park drives, and avoid underestimating distances. Summer can be extremely hot, so fall through spring is generally the more comfortable season. Best season: November through April is usually the best overall window for hiking and desert sightseeing. Spring can bring wildflowers, winter can be cool and quiet, and fall has great light. Summer is better only if you are prepared for serious desert heat and plan very early or very late activities. Possible drawbacks: it is remote, services are limited, and Big Bend travel requires planning. ABOUT SUMMIT Located 8.5 hours from Dallas in Terlingua, this unique glamping destination is a must stay if visiting Big Bend National Park. The property offers 1,000 acres of raw desert land with incredible views and several different options for accommodations, all focused on giving you a reconnection with nature! Fun fact: Summit is located in the Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve which is considered one of the darkest skies in the U.S… meaning the stargazing is unlike anything you’ve probably ever seen! THE CAVES Summit has two man-made mining caves located halfway to the summit of the Tres Cuevas Mountain and they are even more incredible in person. The caves come with a cozy king bed, double rain-head showers for two, a kitchenette and glass windows with the most insane views. THE DOMES Beware, the caves can be very hard to book! But if they aren’t available, see if the summit domes or the stargazing domes with a clear top have room for you! The domes all have king beds and electricity as well as accessibility to a bathhouse with hot showers. If traveling with a larger group they also have two casitas that sleep 4-6 people.
