"Ashland County, Wisconsin, United States"

@interesting

"One of the United States’ most amazing naturally-formed ice caves can be found in the Apostles Islands National Lakeshore Mainland in northern Wisconsin. Meyers Beach, on the shores of Lake Superior, is the access point to the icy caves formed from the freezing lake water. The caves are reached by trekking 1 mile across the frozen Great Lake, but the route is always changing and some years does not open at all due to dangerous conditions. If you’re lucky enough to hit this natural wonder when it’s open, you’ll be privy to chambers filled with thousands of delicate icicles and floors made from clear sheets of ice (through which you can see the bottom of the lake!). The only designated lakeshore outside of Michigan, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore includes 21 islands and nearly 70,000 acres of Lake Superior shoreline in northern Wisconsin. There is plenty to see on the mainland, but while getting to the islands may be a bit challenging (there are no roads or vehicle access to any of the Apostle Islands within the National Lakeshore), the experience is well worth it: Visitors can use a private kayak or boat, or take one of several shuttles, water taxis, or narrated sightseeing tours. Although the lakeshore is open year round, visiting the islands is much easier outside of the winter or shoulder seasons when snow and freezing temperatures may hinder travel. The main attraction of Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is its unique, remote, and natural landscapes. When conditions are ideal in the winter, the park’s ice caves wow visitors with their ephemeral beauty. But exacting conditions must be met before you’re allowed to undertake the 2-mile hike (round trip) on the lake ice, and can change rapidly—so make sure to check with the NPS before you plan your trip."

"Saw FB post from Louis & Lynn. Looks beautiful. They did a 3 hour boat tour around the islands."

"Several of the lakeshore's islands offer campsites on or near a beach, including Outer Island, York Island and Manitou Island. No matter which location you choose, you can expect to find amenities like fire rings and bear-proof food storage lockers. Some sites also offer picnic tables, tent pads and vault toilets or stump privies. Keep in mind, almost all of the lakeshore's campsites are only accessible by boat. You must make advance reservations for camping permits, which are valid for up to 14 days. Anticipate paying $15 per night for an individual campsite that sleeps no more than seven people or $30 per night for a group campsite with space for up to 21 people."
