"Cathedral Gorge State Park is a hidden-gem Nevada stop near Panaca/Pioche, along the Great Basin Highway corridor. It’s known for tall, eroded clay formations, narrow slot-like passages, “moon cave” alcoves, and easy exploring without needing a major hike. Nevada State Parks describes it as a photographer’s dream with hiking, picnicking, camping, and nature study. The park is about 1 mile north of the US-93 and NV-319 junction, sits around 4,800 feet elevation, and is open year-round. Why it’s worth a stop The formations are soft bentonite clay, not hard red sandstone like Utah, so the look is different: pale tan spires, fluted walls, cathedral-like corridors, and narrow cave-like slots you can walk into. It’s very accessible: you can see a lot in 1–2 hours, or spend half a day if you want to hike and photograph it. Best things to do Cathedral Caves / Moon Caves — the signature stop. You can wander into short slot-like passages right off the parking area. Miller Point Overlook — good view over the gorge. You can either drive near it or hike up from the canyon area. Juniper Draw Loop — the main longer hike through the park, often done as an easy/moderate desert walk. Picnic or camp — the park has camping and picnic facilities, and it’s a nice quiet overnight if you’re doing a Great Basin / eastern Nevada road trip. Fees Nevada State Parks lists Cathedral Gorge day-use at $5 per vehicle for Nevada vehicles and $10 for non-Nevada vehicles. Camping is listed at $15 per vehicle/night for Nevada vehicles and $20 for non-Nevada vehicles. Good road-trip fit It works especially well if you’re driving: Las Vegas → Great Basin National Park Las Vegas → Ely → Great Basin / Highway 50 St. George / Cedar City → Pioche / Caliente / Cathedral Gorge Utah parks → Nevada backroads Nearby add-ons include Kershaw-Ryan State Park, Pioche, Caliente, and Great Basin National Park. My take For your style of scenic-road-trip stops, this is a high-value, low-effort stop. It is not a full national-park-scale destination, but it’s absolutely worth detouring for if you’re within an hour or two. I’d plan 90 minutes minimum, 3–4 hours if you want to hike and take your time."
