The salt flats have been used for motor sports first in 1912 in a section of the flats named “Bonneville Speedway”. Many land speed records were set and broken on the flats. The speedway is totally flat and has a stable surface, together with the beautiful mountains which soar in the horizon it is probably the most iconic corner of American motor sports. In winter time, the flats usually get covered with a thin layer of water (typically not more than 5-10 centimeters) and acts as a giant mirror, reflecting the mountains in the background and who&what ever stands there. TIPS: The Access to the flats is free of charge and you can drive on the flats. The picturesque surroundings is worth at least a 1-2 hours visit. sunsets are truly amazing there."
