Pellicci, a historic wood-paneled cafe in East London, lives in a Victorian terrace house nearby and is in the restaurant’s galley kitchen each morning by 6:30, cutting potatoes. Her daughter, Anna, and son, Nevio Jr., lend a hand with the cooking and handle the front of house for the cafe, which has been in business since Maria’s parents-in-law, Priamo and Elide, set up shop in 1900. (The “E” in “E. Pellicci” is for Elide, who raised seven children in the two-room apartment upstairs.) Though the Pelliccis are of Italian descent and close shop for most of August, when they decamp to Tuscany, their restaurant is known for its full English breakfast: a hubcap-size plate that includes a fried egg, a Cumberland sausage, back bacon, grilled tomatoes, Heinz beans, fried mushrooms and toast or fried bread. For a few pounds extra, you can add two crisp triangles of hash browns, plus both black and white pudding (which is akin to black pudding but without the blood). Vegetarians can ask for a serving of bubble and squeak (a pan-fried patty of mashed potatoes and vegetables) as well as homemade fries. Tea comes from a steel kettle so large that leaves are added by the cupful. Typically Anna or Nevio does the pouring, while carrying on conversations, ribbing the regulars and giving tourists recommendations."
