"Masala y Maíz brings together a casual Mexican lunch restaurant with the flavors that feel personal to owners Norma Listman and Saqib Keval, particularly as it pulls in recipes from the latter's Indian heritage. The always-changing menu often includes esquites, traditional Mexican corn kernels, with fresh coconut milk, ginger, turmeric, and topped with purslane, and the fermented rice pancake called uttapam is made here with garbanzo beans and nixtamalized blue corn."

"Reco elle et CN Traveller pour dej Norma Listman, après quelques années en Californie, a ouvert Masala y Maíz avec son mari Saqib Keval, américain d'origine indienne et africaine. Elle se bat pour une scène culinaire plus sociale, féministe, et pour une vision moins coloniale de la cuisine mexicaine, qui doit aussi beaucoup aux migrations africaines."

"amazing Indian-Mexican fusion only open for lunch."

@dominiquedesage

"This place was interesting though not perfect and quite expensive. It is Mexican/Indian/East African fusion and some of the dishes are outstanding - and others very average. The best though, are some of the best you can have in Mexico. It is only open until 6 PM so perfect for a late lunch but not for dinner"

"Chefs Norma Listman and Saqib Kebal never planned on opening a restaurant together. But after spending a night cooking dinner and sharing recipes, they realized the flavors they grew up with (Mexican and Indian) made a perfect pairing. Their restaurant resides in the artsy neighborhood of San Miguel Chapultepec, where they weave together Indian and Mexican flavors through dishes like patra, an hoja santa leaf filled with chickpeas and coconut chutney, and duck tetela with coloradito, a deep-fried tortilla stuffed with duck and mole."

"Chefs Norma Listman y Saqib Keval “Saqib and Norma are not only brilliant chefs combining flavors from South Asia, East Africa, and Mexico, tracing and weaving both of their culinary heritage, but their restaurant reflects their values rooted in social justice. On the menu you'll see slogans like 'White supremacy is terrorism' and a tribute to their employees, who are a majority women. I love a restaurant that stands for something and has great food and a good selection of wines. It makes it super memorable. Go for the barbacoa and the prawns!” —Reem Assil, owner of Reem's California in Oakland, and author of Arabiyya: Recipes From the Life of an Arab in Diaspora"
