"Schinkel Pavilion 1825 Schlossgarten Charlottenburg Karl Friedrich Schinkel This building was erected as private quarters for Friedrich Wilhelm III, under the name "Neuer Pavilion", the new pavilion. It was modelled on the Villa Reale de! Chiatamone in Naples, where the King had stayed on a visit. The structure stands on an almost square floor plan at the eastern end of Schloss Charlottenburg (no. 19), laid out on the Baroque axis system. The rooms are arranged around a central stairway; a gallery on iron trusses surrounds the upper floor. The building was heavily damaged in 1943, with almost all of the furnishings lost. As the building was well documented, it proved possible to rebuild the exterior and interior walls in the years up to 1966, with the pavilion accessible again since 1970. Today, it houses an important art collection from the Schinkel era, and was renovated extensively in 2001."
