"Situated along Park Avenue is a surprising touch of the Far East on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Step into the Asia Society, and you've entered a far-away land, no plane ticket required. The galleries here immerse you in the ancient and the avant-garde. There is much to discover. Founded in 1956 by John D. Rockefeller Ill, the idea was to promote better understanding of Asia through its art and culture. Rockefeller was a passionate collector of Asian art, and his acquisitions form the core of the Asia Society Museum Collection, which is admired across the world. Key pieces on view rotate but often include porce-lain, ceramics, and metal works. A highlight of this museum is the 15th-century Ming-period porcelain flask with vivid, cobalt-blue underglaze. Its lively, three-clawed dragon sweeps across the curved surface, a striking symbol of imperial power. It has a fragility about it but also a strength as an acclaimed masterpiece right before your eyes. So too with the handsome 16th-century square serving dish used in the Japanese art of serving tea. The milky, cream-colored glaze looks somehow modern, despite its great age. It is a visual play on the past and present. Then juxtaposed with these ancient artifacts are the contemporary, rotating exhibitions featuring artists working today who are breaking boundaries of yesterday. It might be a group of drawings inspired by the Vietnam War, or a sculpture installation on political prisoners in Myanmar. The mixture underscores the deep history of Asia and its complex challenges."

L'une des plus belles collections globales d'art asiatique : des objets couvrant toute la culture de l'Extrême-Orient, de la Mongolie au Japon (de 2000 avant J.-C. à nos jours), dans une belle scénographie. Des expositions temporaires aussi, présentées sur deux étages et renouvelées fréquemment. Toujours accompagnées de conférences à thème, de concerts et de projections de film. A voir !"
