Loro Asian Smokehouse & Bar à Austin : fusion BBQ & japonais
"oro is the new Asian smokehouse created by Chef Tyson Cole of Uchi and Uchiko and Chef Aaron Franklin of Franklin Barbecue. I love the rice bowls, chicken karaage, corn fritters, and smoked bavette. Happy hour: Monday – Friday from 2pm – 5pm I always order the fried chicken karaage, a fried marinated chicken thigh dish with sweet chili and seasonal pickles, at Loro. Pair this signature dish with a boozy slushy, chilled beer or signature Japanese Sake, to cool off the hottest Austin temperatures. What to order: chicken karaage or Crispy Smoked Chicken with honey, coconut-cabbage slaw, and hot sauce."

"Kenny Tomlin The brainchild of two Austin superchefs, Franklin Barbecue's Aaron Franklin and Uchi's Tyson Cole, this is an innovative Asian smokehouse on South Lamar that's been insanely popular ever since it opened in 2018. A mix of indoor and outdoor tables, the large covered porch (best described as 'hipster summer camp') is normally the best spot, if it isn't too hot. The food is served on small metal trays, and designed to be shared. Like all good barbecue restaurants, the line at Loro gets long around typical lunch hours, so get here early to avoid disappointment in terms of eating and seating (the beef ribs in particular often sell out early). What's the crowd like? This is South Lamar, still one of the hottest neighborhoods in town. The crowd is youngish and well dressed, in equal parts RayBan and Stetson, Converse and cowboy boot. This is barbecue for a knowing palate, so these are not your run of the mill meat guzzlers. Instead, Loro is for the curious, the cool and the committed, queuing up to enjoy the subtle combinations of flavor and texture that have made this place an innovative island amid the sea of Austin barbecue. How's the bar? The drinks menu consists largely of basic cocktails and boozy slushees (which are admittedly a nice bonus for outdoor dining during Texas summers). Main event: the food. Give us the lowdown—especially what not to miss. As you'd expect from two such esteemed chefs, the menu is both intriguing and unique. The smoked bavette is a must-order (sliced hanger steak topped with shishito salsa and pickled onions), as is the Chicken Karaage, a spicy Japanese twist on traditional fried chicken. Intriguingly, you can order many of the main dishes in rice bowl form, which is a nice alternative. Just ensure you leave enough room for dessert, specifically the seraphic smoked chocolate creme brulee, served with salted peanut brittle. And how do the front-of-house folks treat you? The staff here are generally great, although you should expect an average 20 minute wait between arrival and ordering food. What’s the real-real on why we’re coming here? This is an excellent place to get the whole gang together, particularly around one of the large tables under the roof of the outdoor pavilion/porch. Because the food is designed for sharing, you can kick back and graze together while slurping on frozen cocktails and enjoying the shade for a leisurely hour or two."
