"UNESCO World Heritage Notre-Dame Cathedral, located at the heart of France's Champagne region and built between 1211 and the early fourteenth century on the site of earlier churches, was the Gothic setting for all the coronations since medieval times, including Charles VII in 1429, with Joan of Arc at his side, and France's last king, Charles X in 1825. The windows were damaged and the rood screen destroyed during the French Revolution, and the cathedral's stonework was severely damaged by bombing during World War I. Restoration work, largely funded by John D. Rockefeller, was undertaken in time for the next war, and subsequent repairs were completed in 1996. Notre-Dame was inscribed a World Heritage site in 1991. The grace and beauty of this Gothic cathedral gives visitors the impression that it is built of light and air, rather than stone. On the exterior are elegant flying buttresses, crowned, by. pinnacles sheltering the guardian angels that give rise to the nickname "Cathedral of Angels." Around the chapels of the apse, a delicate openwork gallery is crowned by statues of mythical beasts. The west front is decorated with more than 2,300 statues, including the gallery of fifty-six French kings. Inside, the cathedral is almost 460 feet (140 m) long and 125 feet (38 m) high, so the nave seems to stretch to infinity. The beautiful, twelve-petaled Great Rose Window, best seen in the evening, depicts the Virgin surrounded by the apostles and angel musicians. The cathedral is full of treasures and surprises from across the centuries: When you visit, seek out the exceptional Flamboyant Gothic organ, paintings by Tintoretto and Poussin, and the astronomical clock. A delightful twentieth-century stained-glass window, designed by Marc Chagall, adorns the axial chapel."
