"Tapas free with a drink Reco essayer cachopo Perhaps my favorite bar in the world. I used to live in the same building and would go a few times a week at least. Not fancy, but it has an unbeatable atmosphere and is an authentic experience away from the typical tourist track. Technically, La Pomarada is an Austurian bar (a region in the north of Spain) but the original owner José retired and handed the business off to some chill ass Argentinian cats named Octavio and Gustavo. I recommend staying in the front part of the bar and starting with drinks. The best part of the bar are the copious tapas they give you for free, so if you order food too quickly, they’ll stop dishing them out (this is a pretty good rule of thumb for all of Spain). The more drinks you order, the better the tapa. It can sometimes be up to the luck of the draw, but that’s part of the fun. After you’ve had a few tapas that you like, order the cachopo. You can’t leave La Pomarada without trying it. You will love it. If Jeny or Dani are working while you’re there, tell them you’re friends with Mark and Kat and they’ll treat you right. While you’re in the neighborhood, I recommend stopping in at Rio Miño which is just around the corner. It’s a Gallego bar that gives great tapas (great seafood, among other things) and is another authentic experience. So much so that if you go when it’s not super busy people will probably stare at you, which obviously isn’t the case in a bar accustomed to tourists, so maybe go on the later side. From there, keep walking east into Malasaña and bar hop as you go along."
