Since 1873, the historic Eastern Market near the seat of the U.S. Congress has celebrated all things culinary as a place where farmers sell their produce, cheese, and meat (how about ostrich, alligator, or buffalo?) mostly from farms in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. Weekends are particularly vibrant, with live music and about 100 exhibitors in the outdoor market, with countless more artists and crafters in the surrounding streets. Inside the South Hall Market, you can chow down on specialty fare from butchers, bakers, and gourmet-food makers for a feast to remember. Must-try bites: blueberry-buckwheat pancakes or famous crab cakes from The Market Lunch and half-smokes from Canales Quality Meats."

"The market building’s been at the center of the Capitol Hill community for more than a century and a half. Every weekend, the cross section of 7th Street and C Street SouthEast closes in the early hours of the morning to allow vendors the time to establish their tents and tables and organize their wares. There are dozens of aromatic candles to check out, a pop-up vintage clothing store that arrives in an old quirky bus, and ancient maps from all over the world. Artists sell their paintings that capture unique angles of the city, its inhabitants, and the area’s rich, multicultural underpinning. Visitors move between tents accompanied by the fragrance of the cafes, restaurants, and food stalls lining the street. They enter the historic building, purchase produce for the week, and bask in one of Washington D.C.’s truly unique hubs."

"De grandes tablées situées au fond d'un chouette marché et offrant une grande qualité des produits, l'endroit parfait pour avoir l'impression de s'échapper de la ville. Les halles ont partiellement brûlé en 2007. Une grande partie a été rénovée et on conseille vivement d'aller s'y balader pour déjeuner et, surtout le week-end, pour bruncher.
