"Near the middle of Washington, DC, rises a hill, Capitol Hill, that stretches eastward, and surmounting this is the Capitol, possibly the most culturally and historically important building in the United States. It has been home to the United States Congress since 1800, with Thomas Jefferson being the first president to be sworn in, in 1801. Pierre L'Enfant, a French-born architect and planner, chose the site and described it (then called Jenkins Hill) as a "pedestal waiting to happen. The competition to design a building for Congress was held in 1792 and eventually Dr. William Thornton, whose design was inspired by the Louvre, in Paris, won the commission. The building evolved over many years and is now the culmination of several different architects' work. Despite this, the layout has remained essentially true to Thornton's original plans for a central, cube-shaped building topped with a dome and flanked by two wings, although it has been greatly extended. One of the most distinctive features is the massive cast-iron dome that was built by Thomas U. Walter and is three times the size of the original one. Walter also added the wing extensions. The north wing houses the Senate chamber, whereas the south wing accommodates the House of Representatives chamber. Further changes were made to the east front during the twentieth century to correct the proportionate appearance of the building. The pristine Neoclassical beauty and balance of the Capitol also reflects the influence of St. Paul's Cathedral in London and the dome of St. Peter's Basilica, Rome. The hilltop building is surrounded by the park area of the National Mall, designed by the landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Taken together, the complex is both a symbol of American power and prestige, and an aesthetic triumph."
