"Gold list 2026 CHIANG MAI, THAILA NO Teakwood pillars, stilted floors and high-pitched roofs with gingerbread trims: most of Northern Thailand's noteworthy hotels take their design cues from the erstwhile Lanna Kingdom, whose architectural legacy dots the countryside. Raya Heritage, tucked along a leafy stretch of the Ping River north of Chiang Mai, features few of those hallmarks, yet feels more rooted than many of its peers. Thai design darling Vichada "Dao" Sitakalin turned this low-rise retreat into a living showcase of northern Thai crafts, working with small-town woodworkers, potters and wicker weavers to create bespoke pieces that echo the rural lifestyle and natural riches of the Lanna era. The cream-coloured suites, some with pools, are dressed in bamboo basketry, local ceramic teaware and handwoven textiles dyed in natural indigo. There's a breezy tearoom pouring forest coffee and loose-leaf varietals from Chiang Mai, and a restaurant, Khu Khao (named after the wicker rice baskets hanging from the ceiling), that draws on the region's cultural crossroads with dishes such as Cambodian pork-rib soup, Burmese mohinga and Yunnanese rice salads. The riverfront pool is one of the area's loveliest spots to while away an afternoon, and the spa, offering herb-heavy massages and steam baths, is all anyone needs after a day in the buzz of downtown.
