"Dihua Street in Dadaocheng is where Taipei’s 19th–early 20th century trading wealth shows up in long arcaded shophouses, once packed with tea, herbs, and textiles headed to the rest of the world. Today, many of those buildings host carefully curated boutiques, tea shops, and design stores, so you can literally walk through layers of trade history while shopping for contemporary Taiwanese ceramics or fabrics. The covered sidewalks and arcades make this a very comfortable walking environment in any weather. It’s a great place to think about global history—how tea and mercantile networks linked Taiwan to Europe and North America—and to talk to shop owners about how they see the city evolving. You also get slightly more “grown-up” energy here than in Ximending or Yongkang; fewer teens, more architects, designers, and older locals."
