"Canyon de Chelly is 131 square miles (340 so km) of breathtaking landscape, situated in the northeast comer of Arizona It is part of Navajoland, the largest Native American reservation in North America and its stunning geology includes soaring sandstone cliffs and imposing monoliths. The national monument encompasses three impressive canyons Canyon de Chelly. Canyon del Muerto, and Monument Canyon, encompassing a wealth of fascinating ancient ruins. The Anasazi, the ancestors of the Pueblo people, settled here around the fourth century, and more than 100 ancient village sites of different ages have since been discovered, Perhaps the most striking aspect of this enormous archeological find is the variety of the buildings that the Anasazi built from simple, single dwellings to multistory and many-roomed houses Of particular note is the two-story "White House," so called because of a long wall in the upper reaches that was coated with white plaster. The huge structure is thought to have originally had as many as eighty rooms with four kivas--important ceremonial rooms. The Mummy Cave in Canyon del Muerto is another extraordinary site where two mummies were discovered within a three story tower. The mummies were well preserved by the intense dryness of the desert climate, and it is this aridity that has contributed to the preservation of many of the more fragile ruins. The Anasazi moved on around the thirteenth century and approximately 300 years ago the Navajo settled the area and began farming the canyon floot, which they continue to do today. Canyon de Chelly is an area of outstanding natural beauty, a dramatic landscape crafted by nature, shifting rock formations, roaring rivers- -now dry and searing winds, and a place of cultural heritage."
