"Second highest peak of Africa, at 5,199m It is an ancient extinct volcano that, during its period of activity (3.1-2.6 million years ago), would have reached 6,500 m. There are still a dozen glaciers on the mountain, all rapidly retreating, and there are four secondary peaks located at the head of U-shaped glacial valleys. With its rugged peaks, crowned with glaciers, and its medium wooded slopes, Mount Kenya is one of the most impressive landscapes in East Africa. The evolution and ecology of the Afro-alpine flora of Mount Kenya provide an exceptional example of ecological and biological processes. Together with the Lewa Wildlife Conservatory and the Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve, the site includes deep valleys of low slopes and arid habitats rich in biodiversity, located in an ecological transition zone between a mountainous ecosystem and semi-arid savannah meadows. The place is also located on the traditional migration route of African elephant populations."

"Le Mont Kenya, du haut de ses 5200 mètres d'altitude, domine le pays à qui il a donné son nom. Après quelques heures de route vers le nord depuis Nairobi, il vous surveille de loin. Il est assez rarement la destination ultime, et pourtant il est situé sur l'équateur. Si l'on peut y rencontrer de nombreux animaux dont des éléphants, des rhinocéros et autres singes, il est l'un des paradis des grimpeurs téméraires. Trois jours sont nécessaires pour en faire l'ascension et elle est ardue. Au début, la randonnée se déroule dans de denses forêts primaires. Puis, peu à peu, la végétation laisse sa place à la roche aride avant d'atteindre quasiment le sommet à un peu moins de 5000 mètres d'altitude. La situation centrale du mont permet aux audacieux d'embrasser le pays, des côtes de l'océan Indien aux terres arides du nord et aux grandes villes du sud. Notre conseil Tenter une nuit en «tree lodge», ces lodges perchés tels des bateaux échoués, sur de larges pilotis. Ici, le safari consiste à attendre que les animaux, éléphants, rhinocéros et autres félins viennent s'y abreuver. L'un d'eux, le Treetops, fut selon la légende, celui où la reine Elizabeth dormit la nuit où son père est mort et où de fait, elle devint reine. "

"Outre l'ascension du Mont Kenya qui se fait généralement en trois jours, de nombreuses randonnées sont possibles, sans forcément atteindre le sommet. Escalade et spéléologie également pour les amateurs."
