"UNESCO World Heritage Lumbini has become Nepal's most popular pilgrimage site. It houses a Buddhist monastery and tembles erected by Buddhists from all over the world-including China, Japan, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Vietnam — but its ancient ruins are far more evocative. The word Lumbini has long been known as the name of the Buddha's birthplace, but with the passage of time and the changing of political and geographical boundaries, the town was forgotter and for centuries its exact location was uncertain. It was rediscovered toward the end of the nineteenth century, when a German archeologist, Dr, Alois Fuhrer, deciphered the ancient text on a stone column. it declared that thes was the birthplace of the Buddha and that it had been visited by the Buddhist emperor Ashoka, who reigned in the third century sce. He had erected the column as a memorial to the Buddha and to commemorate his own visit. Ashoka also decreed that the town of Lumbini was exempt from paying taxes in recognition ofthe Buddha's greatness. Not far from the column is a peaceful sacred pool, Puskarni, believed to be the place where the Buddha's mother. Maya Devi, bathed before giving birth and where the baby was given his first wash. Nearby, far into the foundations of the ruins of an ancient temple devoted to the Buddha's mother, is a memorial stone, purportedly marking the exact location where Maya Devi gave birth to her famous son."
