"Roughly 377 million years ago, a meteorite larger than the island of Mauritius slammed into the Earth right about here, generating an explosion equal to 500 million atomic bombs. Today, evidence of Europe's greatest meteor impact manifests itself in the geography, geology and culture around Dalarna, including the Falu red cottages that characterise Sweden's architecture (the paint was originally created from the Falun mine's iron-rich tail-ings). The related Siljan Geopark is currently under development, comprising a massive ring 60km in diameter that encompasses most of the Siljansringen - the ancient crater of which Lake Sil-jan is but a part. The lake itself marries sparkling waters with lush forested landscapes, outdoor activities and a rich tradition of folk art. Ogle Dala horses being carved by hand in Nusnäs, learn about the life of one of the nation's best-loved artists, An-ders Zorn, in Mora, or just relax and enjoy life in lovely Tällberg. The 354-sq-km Lake Siljan is one of Sweden's most picturesque. This 138km round-trip driving tour starts out of Siljan's postcard moment, 1 Tällberg, a village of mostly private Falu-hued cottages climbing the landscape from the shores of the lake. Head 15km south following Hjortnäs Siljansvägen, Hjort-näsheden Siljansvägen and Siljansvägen to 2 Leksand. Outside the town's raucous mid-sommar celebration, Leksand is a sleepy set-tlement, home to beloved crispbread (Lek-sands Knäckebröd). Stop for a cinnamon roll at Siljans Konditori before touring the mansion of Munthe's Hildasholm. The 45km drive northwest along Lundbjörken Moravägen on the lake's western side is less developed. 3 Sollerön is the largest island on the lake and home to Dalarna's largest Viking-era grave fields. Continue northwest until reaching Europaväg 45/E45. Follow it an additional 4km northeast to 4 Mora, the lake's biggest settlement and home to the world's biggest cross-country ski race, the Vasaloppet. Also here is Zornmuseet and Zorngärden, the museum and fascinating home, respective-ly, of renowned Swedish painter Anders Zorn (1860-1920). Follow Europaväg 45/E45 east out of Mora to Färnäs. It's a 5.7km drive south along Hansjonsgatan and Nusnäs bygata to 5 Nusnäs, where one of Sweden's most endearing symbols, the hand-carved, hand-painted Dala horse, is produced. Continue southeast for 30km on Route 70 into 6 Rättvik, to tackle the impressive 628m-long Langbryggan, Scandinavia's longest wooden pier. It concludes in a few benches and a small patch of grass - an ideal picnic spot in summer. For panoramic lake views, the nearby Vidablick Utsiktstorn (a viewing tower), frames the lake's entirety from 28m high."
