"STAY? This wildly romantic William and Mary house wrapped in Arts and Crafts gardens is a dreamy Cotswolds paradise. Barnsley House, a 17th-century Grade Il listed manor, had been a hotel for 20 years, but its innate charm was fading fast. The timing of its rebranding by The Pig was impeccable, as the group's founder and creative director, Robin and Judy Hutson, were looking for a final project before retirement. The seasoned hoteliers have revitalised this architectural gem as their legacy. Their trademark conviviality shines through in interiors that are heavy on the upcycled, the reclaimed and the vintage, with flea market paintings, boutique brocante and low-slung furniture in lush velvets and flower-petal fabrics. Service is as warm and inviting as the pink and purple mood board. This 17th-century country house near Cirencester, enveloped in world-famous gardens, is looking more luscious than ever following a sensitive renovation by the much-loved Pig Hotels group. The manor's charm stems from its doll's house dimensions, embellished with architectural flourishes such as turrets and temples. Those proportions seemed a little poky, however, when the Grade Il-listed building changed from a family home to a hotel 20 years ago - but the Pig team has cleverly recalibrated the interiors and conjured up dinky but decadent sitting rooms wonderfully accessorised by views of the soft-focus borders through their mullioned windows. The late, great horticulturalist Rosemary Verey lived at Barnsley House, as the hotel was formerly known, for 50 years and lavished every square inch of earth with tender expertise, creating what is widely regarded as the pre-eminent example of an Arts and Crafts garden, with tables for alfresco dinners and a small spa tucked away beyond its wild flower meadow. The restaurant stays true to those roots too, with apple-green panelling, wrought-iron garden furniture and potted herbs in pallet boxes. Its 25-mile menu delivers rustic dishes (Jerusalem artichoke risotto, salt-baked celeriac) with flair. The 26 bedrooms are surprisingly spacious and sexily serene, decked out with cushion-heavy beds, floral wallpapers, vintage furniture and the Pigs' trademark quirky curios.
