"Why book? Something of an unsung hero of the London hotel scene but, to those who know it, one of the loveliest, warmest, and most unobtrusively delightful places to stay in the capital, combining classic good looks and impeccable manners with an irrepressible sense of fun. Set the scene It's a classic stucco-fronted Victorian pile a dinosaur’s stride from the Natural History Museum, Science Museum, and V&A. Inside the front door, two immediate impressions: the tremendous breadth of the place, extending for a full block to your left, with no obstacle apart from common courtesy to prevent you from roller-skating all the way down it if you felt like it; and the immensely cozy yet entirely unstuffy Englishness of it all. The rooms Considerable variety. The small, contemporary rooms on the top floors are actually very chic and streamlined; the larger rooms more traditionally and sumptuously decorated (heavy fabrics, claw-foot baths, four-posters, working fireplaces). Two of the signature suites, the Kensington and the Brompton, on the first floor, are the pick of the litter. Food and drink The K Bar is sleek and swishy and takes its cocktails seriously; the Town House restaurant is sprawling and remarkably flexible, with a sort of charmingly split personality—bright and cheerful and welcoming in the morning and throughout the day, rather more cosseted and intimate and enveloping after dark. The neighborhood/area You are smack-bang in the middle of South Kensington, and there are few more amusing, diverse, and agreeable parts of London to be smack-bang in the middle of. Though there is no shortage of hotels in the neighborhood, the Kensington is right up there with the best of them, including the Pelham, the Franklin, and the Gore. Worth it? Yes—this is a little gem that deserves to be better known. In its unobtrusive way, it compares favorably with more familiar London hotels of a similar ilk—including, of course, its more famous sibling-properties the Marylebone and the Bloomsbury."
