"CNT 2024 A worn limestone arch pierces the massive walls of Fort Mamula, circled by rose and gold waters and the grey-tipped wings of gulls. The Mamula Island hotel is the fruit of a lengthy restoration project that has gloriously reincarnated a derelict and vandalised Austro-Hungarian fort, on a rocky islet where the Adriatic meets Montenegro's Bay of Kotor. Thirty-two rooms and suites take over the 19th-century tower, cannon rooms and ramparts, and concentric walls, courtyards and towers wrap around a central space with three pools. The interiors are softer - an antidote to all that martial grandeur - with natural fabrics, warm brass, solid oak and smooth curves that echo the lofty, barrel-vaulted ceilings. The view is omnipresent, looking out to the crystalline coast, where wild boar forage in the maquis above sea caves and Yugoslav submarine tunnels, and to the mountains of the Dinaric Alps. Hazy days begin with dawn yoga, followed by explorations of the Venetian merchants' palaces, marinas and small fishing villages that cling to this narrow coastline. Later come feasts of local oysters against a backdrop of sailing boats bobbing in the steep bays of the Lustica peninsula.
