"“Roughly equidistant from Lubbock and Amarillo, Caprock Canyons State Park boasts magnificent topography that seems all the more startling given the relatively flat landscapes that surround it. Hiking, wildlife-watching and camping under the stars are the big draws of this remote patch of Texas. Some 26 miles of trails course through the park, with the most scenic (and challenging) trails on the park’s west side. Take in dramatic views by traveling up the North Prong Spur to the John Haynes Ridge (the highest portion in the park) and looping back along the Upper North Prong Trail, a 6.4-mile excursion. Close to the park entrance, you’ll find highlights like Lake Theo, with shaded picnic spots overlooking the water, and the Honey Flat Prairie Dog Town, where you can spot black-tailed prairie dogs that yelp and dive into their burrows if you get too close. But Caprock Canyons’ biggest stars are the 150 or so bison that freely roam the park. The official Texas State Bison Herd are direct descendants from a genetically pure herd started by the famed rancher Charles Goodnight in the 1870s. Apart from camping in the park, lodging options are extremely limited. "
