It started out as the home of the Duke of Tuscia, and spent many years passing through the hands of various upper-class families and prominent citizens – including Napoleon’s sister! Despite its long and distinguished pedigree, the complex wasn’t open to the public until 2015; but was you explore its wonders, you’ll see that it was certainly worth the wait! Along with two palatial mansions and some renowned theaters, the complex features an incredible array of gardens that would be well worth a trip in their own right! Enjoy the elegant designs in the Spanish Garden, or soak up the citrusy scents in the Lemon Garden. Drink in the tranquil views of the on-site lake, or indulge in some whimsy at Pan’s Grotto, with its charming nymph statues. This certainly isn’t your average backyard garden!"

"When Napoleon conquered Lucca in the 18th century, he appointed his sister, Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi, its ruler. She chose Villa Reale di Marlia, a grand 17th-century estate, as her summer residence. The princess exponentially enhanced the villa’s gardens and architecture, transforming it into a splendid example of Neoclassical style inspired by the Parisian gardens of Versailles. In 2015, the villa underwent a restoration process to revive its grandeur after a period of abandonment, preserving the empire-style interiors, frescoed ceilings and sensational Carrara marbled bathrooms. Stroll through the magnificent gardens and explore the Teatro di Verzura, the oldest theatre in Europe. In 2024, the villa will open 11 new suites. Opening times: November–December: open at weekends 10:00–17:00; February: open at weekends 10:00–18:00; March–November: open every day from 10:00–18:00."

"La plus célèbre et la plus impressionnante des villas de Marlia, placée au centre d'un grand parc de seize hectares, et qui porte l'empreinte d'Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi, princesse de Lucca et soeur de Napoléon, qui la restructura au cours du XIX e siècle. Cette illustre demeure, située au pied du plateau de Pizzorne, date du XVII e siècle. Il est possible de visiter différentes résidences d'époque, telles la palazzine Gemelle, construite par l'architecte Giovanni Lazzarini à l'initiative de la soeur de Napoléon (bâtiment rouvert en 2018 suite à d'importants travaux de restauration), la villa del Vescovo (XVI e siècle), adjacente au Nymphaeum, le lieu sacré des nymphes, également appelé " Grotta di Pan " car dédié au dieu Pan, et enfin, l'élégante palazzina dell'Orologio avec sa loggia (XVIII e siècle). Le parc de la villa comprend de formidables jardins botaniques ainsi que des bijoux architecturaux. La rénovation débutée en 2015 par les nouveaux propriétaires s'est attaquée aux bâtiments principaux pour s'achever courant 2018 avec les jardins. La visite réserve de nombreuses surprises, vous serez submergés par la beauté des jardins italien et espagnol, ainsi que du Jardin aux Citrons ( Giardino dei Limoni ) où poussent plus de deux cents plants d'agrumes. Les fontaines et points d'eau agrémentent les jardins pour leur donner une touche romantique. Disponibles gratuitement à la réception, deux itinéraires, celui des Eaux et celui des Architectures, vous accompagnent à la découverte d'oeuvres d'art et de sublimes panoramas."
