"Open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., from November to March until 5 p.m.; greenhouses open from 9am to 5pm BOTANICAL GARDEN The botanical garden of the University of Basel, created in 1589, is, as such, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. Founded by naturalist Caspard Bauhin (1560-1624), it was initially intended for the teaching, research and preservation of plant species. From now on, it has become a very popular place of walk for the people of Basel, who can come and stroll among seven thousand five hundred species of plants. The Viktoriahaus, a greenhouse dating from 1898, is home to giant water lilies, while the tropical greenhouse with three naves, inaugurated in May 2023, welcomes the tallest plants; the star comes from Indonesia and is called "Arum titan" (Amorphophallus titanum), known to wise minds as the "phallus of Titan". It forms the largest flower of the plant kingdom (3 meters) and blooms only for 72h, releasing a pestilential smell close to that of a corpse.
