"Best at sunrise, arrive early, long lens needed. Shot Saturday, July 16, 2011 6:40:20 PM GMT at GPSCoordinates: 47°1'55.914" N 117°17'49.008" W"

"Description: 📍 At sunrise and sunset each day, the light rakes across the hills of the Palouse illuminating the region’s dramatic landscape. To best photograph it, you need to be above the hills, looking down as the shadows define the hills and valleys – there is no better spot than Steptoe Butte. You’ll want to pull out your medium to long telephoto lens to zoom in on details of the landscapes – the shapes and textures of the hills, the interplay of shadows and highlights, details of isolated trees, curving lines of tractor tracks in the fields, farms in the distance. However, you can also use your wide-angle lens here placing wildflowers in the grass in the foreground. Or you may want a wide-angle to normal lens to record a dramatic sky at sunset. At these lower, northern viewpoints, a favorite subject of mine is a single tree on the Steptoe hillside overlooking the rolling hills below. To the north, there are views of wind turbines set on Steam Shovel Hill, about 4.5 miles away. The lower slopes of Steptoe Butte, such as near these viewpoints, have plenty of springtime wildflowers that make good foreground subjects. Though less so here than at the top, it is often very windy on Steptoe Butte. For the sharpest images, you will want a sturdy tripod, particularly if shooting with a long lens. You may wish to increase your ISO as well to keep exposure times shorter. While it is normally good advice to turn off image stabilization on a lens if you are shooting from a tripod, here with the wind, I typically shoot a number of shots with it on and a number of shots with it off to see which end up being sharper. The view Steptoe Butte is truly spectacular in the golden hours when the light rakes across the landscape below. Often the best time is an hour or so prior to sunset or after sunrise, but each day is different. And the light can still be magical a half hour or more after the sun sets or before it rises. However, if the sky is overcast, you might want to leave Steptoe Butte for another day. The fields below the viewpoints will be seemingly every color of green in spring and early summer. In late summer, most of the fields will be golden. By mid-fall some of the fields will typically be plowed under as the landscape is painted with browns and golds. In winter, the fields are occasionally covered with snow. Steptoe Butte State Park is a day-use park (no camping) open daily year round. The road is not plowed in the winter and may be closed depending on conditions. At this lower, western viewpoint, a favorite subject of mine is a single tree to the west-southwest of the viewpoint located along a curving drainage. This tree, about two miles from the viewpoint, is along Tennessee Flat Road (it is another spot described on Photohound). Good captures of the tree can be made with telephotos in the 300 to 600 mm range. Another favorite is the grain elevator in the town of Steptoe, located to the southwest. To the north, there are views of wind turbines set on Steam Shovel Hill, about 4.5 miles away, and to the northeast, you can shoot a lone tree on the side of Steptoe (located near the North Steptoe Butte Viewpoint spot described on Photohound) with Tekoa Mountain in the background and rolling hills between. To the south are a series of cottonwood trees in a nearby drainage between hills that make a good focal point. However, if the sky is totally overcast, you might want to leave Steptoe Butte for a later day. On the other hand, partially cloudy days can give dramatic results. The fields below the viewpoints will be seemingly every color of green in spring and early summer. In late summer, most of the fields will be golden. By mid-fall some of the fields will typically be plowed under as the landscape is painted with browns and golds. In winter, the fields are occasionally (but not always) covered with snow. Steptoe Butte State Park is a day-use park (no camping) open daily year round. The road is not plowed in the winter and may be closed depending on conditions. Use caution if traveling on the road when ice and/or snow is present. The road is narrow and often has steep drop offs without a guard rail. A Discover Pass is required for Steptoe Butte State Park. Passes are available on site (or can be purchased ahead of time online or at many sporting goods stores in the state).
