"UNESCO World Heritage Drottningholm is a sumptuous Baroque castle, rich in architectural detail. It is one of the royal palaces of Sweden and is currently the private residence of the Swedish royal family. It was built in 1662 by Queen Dowager Hedwig Eleonora. She employed the master architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder to build the castle, but as he died before being able to finish it, his son, Nicodemus Tessin the Younger, eventually completed the work. The strong-willed and ruthless Eleonora intended to produce a grand residence that reflected the wealth and power that Sweden had accrued under the Peace of Westphalia. As the protector of the then-underage King Charles XI of Sweden, she was in control of royal affairs and had the power to command the large-scale and impressive construction. In 1744 Drottningholm passed to Louisa Ulrika of Prussia on her marriage to Adolf Frederick of Sweden. Under her leadership the palace interior was transformed. Attention was given to every room, adding a 'sophisticated Rococo style. Louisa Ulrika was responsible for rebuilding the Palace Theater in a bold fashion, using stucco, papier mâché decorations, and large paintings. She was also responsible for the Chinese pavilion, built in 1753 in a basic French Rococo style adorned with Chinese and Oriental features that were fashionable in the 1700s. As well as the theater and Chinese pavilion, the palace has a church (still attended by its congregation) and two beautiful gardens that are mostly accessible to the public- a Baroque garden with wide avenues, and an English garden set with ponds, canals, bridges, and deliberately picturesque vistas. As a whole, Drottningholm is an incomparable seventeenth- and eighteenth-century northern European royal residence, inspired by the Palace of Versailles."
