"UNESCO World Heritage The Holstentor presents an almost Disneyland image. Along with more than 1,000 buildings in Lübeck's Altstadt. (Old Town), it has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Lübeck was the center of the powerful Hanseatic League, a trading bloc founded in the twelfth century for the mutual defense of trade. It united more than 1,500 merchant cities, from Novgorod to London. The league met for the last time in 1669 and today Lübeck is merely a provincial city, albeit with a fairy-tale appearance. The gateway comprises two round pointed towers at the north and south sides, with an arched entranceway between them. On one side it bears the Latin inscription "Concordia Domi Fortis Pax, roughly translated as "Harmony Within, Peace Without. The other side is inscribed "SPQL-The Senate and People of Lübeck. The four-story building was erected by the city's master builder, Heinrich Helmsted, between 1464 and 1478, unfortunately on marshy ground. A front gate added in 1585, supposed to improve the city's western defenses, had to be demolished because the Holstentor was sinking and in danger of collapse- by 1863 the lowest arrow slits were found to be about 2 feet (0.6 m) below ground level. Efforts continued unsuccessfully until 1871 to arrest the movement, but by 1934 more advanced techniques were available and further subsidence was finally halted. The two towers, however, still visibly lean toward each other. Further renovation work was carried out in 2005 and 2006 to stabilize the building. Since 1950 the Holstentor has housed the museum of the city's history and is treasured as a national icon. It appears on the German 2 Euro coin and on the former 50 Deutschmark note, and is also a popular souvenir modeled in marzipan, a centuries-old Lübeck specialty."
