L'Istanbul Museum of Modern Art, situé dans le quartier de Karaköy à Beyoğlu, a ouvert ses portes en 2004. Fondé par un collectif d’artistes et de passionnés, il s’inscrit dans la volonté de valoriser la scène artistique turque et internationale. Depuis ses débuts, le musée s’est imposé comme un lieu de référence pour la promotion de l’art contemporain, offrant une plateforme aux artistes locaux et étrangers pour exposer leurs œuvres et favoriser les échanges culturels.
Ce musée se distingue par ses expositions variées, mettant en lumière des œuvres modernes et innovantes. Il propose également un restaurant sur place, permettant aux visiteurs de profiter d’un moment de détente tout en découvrant la richesse de la culture artistique turque et mondiale. La collection permanente, bien que modeste, présente principalement des artistes turcs, avec des expositions temporaires captivantes, notamment celles de Refik Anadol ou Hale Tenger, qui abordent des thèmes tels que la migration ou la discrimination.
L’architecture du bâtiment, conçue par Renzo Piano, évoque un navire amarré, avec une terrasse offrant une vue imprenable sur la ville et le Bosphore. L’ambiance y est contemporaine, épurée, et invite à la découverte dans un décor moderne et sophistiqué, parfait pour apprécier l’art dans un cadre inspirant et culturellement riche.

"The Istanbul Modern, an imposing concrete and steel museum that opened in 2023, sits on a bank of the Bosporus, the busy waterway that divides the European and Asian sides of the city (entry, 750 lira, or $19). Rotating exhibitions on the ground floor showcase contemporary art. Upstairs, the permanent “Floating Islands” exhibition features Turkish artworks from the permanent collection, tracing shifts in Turkish life across the 20th and early 21st centuries. Accompanying placards provide helpful context about artists’ education, lives and intentions. Artworks from the later decades include works exploring themes like womanhood, migration and machine intelligence. "Histoire. Le projet Istanbul Modern a débuté en 1987 à l'occasion de la première exposition internationale d'art contemporain, connue aujourd'hui sous le nom de Biennale internationale d'Istanbul. Motivé par l'intérêt des locaux pour l'événement et le dynamisme qu'il a apporté à la scène artistique d'Istanbul, le Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı s'est lancé dans le projet visant à doter Istanbul d'un musée permanent d'art contemporain, une grande première à l'époque. En 2003, le 4 e entrepôt sur la jetée de Galata, près de l'Académie des beaux-arts Mimar Sinan, accueillit la 8 e Biennale d'Istanbul et attisa les convoitises. Après que Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, le Premier ministre de l'époque, eut donné son approbation pour la réaffectation du site, l'entrepôt de marchandises sèches appartenant à l'Organisation maritime turque fut transformé en un temple de l'art moderne. Visite. Le grand espace qu'offrent les 8 000 m² du bâtiment permet une découpe en grandes salles nettes et ouvertes les unes sur les autres. L'escalier central qui part du rez-de-chaussée, où se trouvent une salle vidéo et une exposition de photographies, permet un accès aux collections de peintures du premier étage. Ces dernières, en majorité privées, regroupent des tableaux d'artistes turcs inspirés du style occidental. Les collections changent pour atteindre un style résolument moderne. En haut, les visiteurs sont invités à boire un verre dans un café au style particulièrement branché (en verre) avec une superbe vue sur le Bosphore (de 10h à 23h30, fermé le dimanche et lundi soir). Il est également possible de vous y restaurer, la carte du soir étant nettement plus élaborée et, par conséquent, plus chère. Dans le quartier du musée vous trouverez de nombreuses terrasses accueillantes pour boire un thé après votre visite. Un musée à ne pas manquer !"
