"BLOG: Kursi is the largest Byzantine era monastery discovered in Israel. It was built to commemorate the story of the Demons and the Pigs. After being taken over Muslims in the 7th century in continued to be used for secular purposes, but was mostly destroyed in the 749 earthquake. It was discovered during roadwork in the 70s in the wake of the 6 day war. Connection to the New Testament The Gospels tells how Jesus heals the madman, after sailing across the Sea of Galilee and landing in the Country of Gadarenes (Gader, south east corner of the lake). He drives out the devils into a herd of swine, who “ran violently down a steep place into the sea and were choked in the sea”. Based on the geographical descriptions and archaeological finds, Kursi had been connected with Gadernes. The act shows Jesus’s comfort / ability / necessity to interact with non-Jewish peoples. Kursi is mention in the talmud as being a place of pagan worship, and the fact that pigs are being grown there, also testifies to its gentile population. THE CHURCH AND MONASTERY • A well in the atrium. Free water to anyone who want to come near the church. • The mosaic floor on the north aisle, decorated with birds and fish, and pictures of plants such as dates, citrons, grapes and pomegranates. The birds and fish were vandalized, probably by its later residents. • Church also has a baptistery, oil press, crypt (with 30 skeletons). KURSI CHURCH • The Chapel on the hill • Belived to mark the location where the madman revealed himself. The mosaic cross on the floor indicates that it was likely built before the 427 decision against it. • Huge rock that writes the text from the new testament in the sand"

"On y trouve les vestiges du plus grand monastère chrétien de Palestine de l'époque byzantine. Il mesurait 145 mètres de long sur 123 mètres de large. Il fut construit au V e siècle pour célébrer le miracle de Jésus qui exorcisa ici un homme possédé en transférant le mal dans un troupeau de porcs. Le site aurait été détruit en 614, lors de l'invasion perse. Ses vestiges ont été découverts lors de la construction de la route, après la guerre des Six Jours."
