"Circa: 2024 · Times Visited: 7 As of spring 2026 this is probably my favorite restaurant in Calgary. I don't say that lightly and I don't say it often. Seven visits in and this place hasn't given me a single reason to reconsider, and although there's lots of competition in AB I find they tend to severely fall short in one category. *Food — 8.3 / 10* *Starters Cheese Toast — 7.4 Weirdly feels like a classic at a steakhouse which I never really understood but at the end of the day it's one of the better ones I've had for what it is. Vintage Caesar — 7.5 Clearly made fresh and from scratch. Kind of hard to fuck up but they didn't, and it was really solid. Alberta Carpaccio — 6.8 One of the most fun ways to enjoy an appetizer but it left a little on the table this time around. Prime Steak Tartar — 8.4 One of my favorite appetizers in Calgary, potentially full stop. Really like the way they do the beef and the house made chips that come with it. An absolute standout. Hokkaido Scallops — 8.2 I got food poisoning from scallops as a kid and I just feel like I never really trust them anymore, but this is one place where I'm almost getting them every single time. So juicy and very Canadian. Jumbo Prawn Cocktail — 4.8 Still kind of bullshit. Just cook it and put some butter on it. I tried it here and it's still kind of bullshit. Fuck off. Moving on. Canadian Oysters — 7.4 Super fresh from a supplier I'm aware of and trust, and that goes a really long way with oysters. Pretty pricey but delicious. *Mains* Braised Beef Short Ribs — 7.6 Really delicious but not something I'd be ordering if I was taking somebody I wanted to show the restaurant off to for the first time. Judged independently it stands on its own — it just gets crowded out by the company it keeps on this menu. Prime Tenderloin — 8.1 There isn't much to say about tenderloin that hasn't already been said but I got it rare which is kind of how you have to do it in my opinion. Super lean cut, very reputable supplier, and one of my favorite cuts at this restaurant. I've had it three or four times and it has always stood the test of time. New York Strip — 7.7 I'm not a huge fan of this cut when I'm spoiled with choice but that doesn't mean it wasn't delicious. Got it rare, cooked perfectly, cut up really nicely over some fries I requested specifically. One of those cuts I'd rather get when there's a bigger group so we can share other things. Slow Roasted Prime Rib — 8.9 One of the best prime ribs I've ever had. Specifically the 6 to 12 rib spot which is obviously the sweet spot. I don't like this cut rare so I always get it medium rare and cut up, it's just absolutely perfect and one of my favorite dishes at this restaurant full stop. Ribeye — 8.4 Cooked perfectly in both rare and medium rare across my visits, both were really really good. A very comfortable order every single time. Wagyu Ribeye — 9.1 This was ridiculous. Came with a certificate. An Australian wagyu, very small cut, simple sear, and it absolutely delivered. Only the second time in my life I've had authenticated certified wagyu and without a doubt a 9.1 — and I'll note for full transparency that I didn't pay for it, but I'm not adjusting the score. Bone In New York Strip — 7.8 Having worked in a steakhouse I can confidently say this is one of the hardest cuts to cook and most people weren't allowed to. This one was cooked absolutely perfectly and I would get it over the regular strip every time. You really feel that bone flavor coming through. *Sides* Truffle Mac and Cheese — 7.4 Really nice with very generous portions which is a theme at this restaurant. Not a go-to every visit but absolutely the move when the table is hungry and sharing is the vibe. Lobster Mashed Potatoes — 6.5 Good for what they are but I almost wish they'd charge more and put more lobster in there because you can barely tell it's there. I've run this shit and I know we're taking scraps from the bigger lobster tails and putting them in mashed potato for maximized profits. I respect the hustle, I just wish they'd committed to the bit a little harder and charged me lol Onion Rings — 6.0 Fine. I didn't order them but I had some. Fine. Scalloped Potatoes — 8.9 Probably my favorite side at this restaurant, probably because I love scalloped potatoes but also because they do it so well, which is a really good indicator of a great steakhouse, unlike cheesy bread which makes no sense. I really love these. Honey Roasted Carrots — 8.5 Very close second favorite side. At some point in this experience you're like Jesus Christ I should have some vegetables and that's where carrots covered in honey come in really clutch. Whipped Yukon Potatoes — 6.1 I make whipped mash at home occasionally and I like it, but this one didn't hit hard enough for me. Very airy and soft and prepared well, just not a go-to. Garlic Mushrooms — 7.8 Another classic steakhouse side. I love this always regardless of what else I'm getting. Simple and delicious, never needs to be more than it is honestly. --------------------------------------------- Drinks — 7.6 / 10 A very strong whiskey and cocktail program and as everybody knows I'm not a big alcohol guy, but this is a very high level steakhouse alcohol program and I've had some fantastic wines across my visits. What puts it at 7.6 is also the staff's knowledge of it, they know what they're talking about and that counts. Service — 9.25 / 10 Your first impression is everybody wearing butcher coats and that is intentional, literally from the beginning they want you to know this is about the meat and nothing else, some cooking happens along the way but it begins and ends with the meat. The staff comes out and gives you a full passionate explanation of every cut on the board, walks you through everything going on behind the scenes, and answers every question you have. I've been there with my mother who loves asking questions so trust me I know, and I have literally never seen the staff be short with anybody. They are well seasoned wait staff but unlike some of Calgary's more self-important steakhouses they don't treat you like it's an honor to have some steak tonight (Cesar's) instead they treat you like an honored guest, making sure you understand the heritage that is behind Alberta beef. If that sounds like poetry it's because to me it really is, and 9.25 reflects that. Vibe — 8.4 / 10 Kind of exactly what you want from a steakhouse. Comfortable seating somewhere you can get fat, really good lighting: not too bright and not too dark, which I find is an issue at a lot of places and these really cool backlit LED menus that take the pain of my dad taking out his phone flashlight just to order some food completely out of the equation. It has an authentic old school feel which is increasingly rare and increasingly valuable in a QR code world. Value — 7.8 / 10 At the end of the day you're still going to one of the best steakhouses in a place that's known for steak in Calgary and Alberta, but they do things others don't like the Sunday date night deals blow me away every single time, the food portions are extremely generous, and the level of education and hospitality you're getting is truly on a Michelin level if we're being honest. When the word value takes into account what you're getting for the money you're paying, this place rates pretty unbelievably high for a high end restaurant and 7.8 reflects that. Overall — 8.65 / 10 Seven visits, a 9.25 on service, an 8.9 prime rib, a 9.1 wagyu, and the title of my current favorite restaurant in Calgary as of 2026. The numbers speak for themselves and so does the fact that I keep going back. If you're in Calgary and you eat steak there is no excuse not to be here. If you're a local and you prefer Hy's, lose my number. *Tried So Far* Starters Cheese Toast Vintage Caesar Alberta Carpaccio Prime Steak Tartar Hokkaido Scallops Jumbo Prawn Cocktail Canadian Oysters Mains Braised Beef Short Ribs Prime Tenderloin New York Strip Slow Roasted Prime Rib Ribeye Wagyu Ribeye Bone In New York Strip Sides Truffle Mac and Cheese Lobster Mashed Potatoes Onion Rings Scalloped Potatoes Honey Roasted Carrots Whipped Yukon Potatoes Garlic Mushrooms"
