"qui sono stati sezionati i primi cadaveri nel ‘800"

@matt11

"The University of Padua, founded in 1222, is the second oldest in Italy and is one of the oldest in Europe; its anatomical theater is the oldest still in existence in the world. The university had established a reputation as one of the leading centers for anatomical research, thanks in part to its freedom from church interference. In the sixteenth century, the university's academic independence from the church was preserved by protection given by the Venetian Republic, which allowed important research to take place, despite the church's misgivings. The university's faculty of medicine, in particular, also benefited from the presence of some of the most important figures in early modern medicine, who began to study the body from an empirical perspective and made pioneering discoveries about basic bodily functions. These included Hieronymous Fabricius, who held the chair in surgery and anatomy at the university and discovered the valves inside human veins. It was Fabricius who designed the anatomical theater in the shape of a human eye, with a balustrade of wooden balconies around the operating table, and his involvement in establishing the theater was commemorated with the inscription of his name above the theater's doorway. Inaugurated in 1594, operations in the 200-seat theater were open to public view, with special concentration given to procedures where the patient had suffered lacerations as a result of violence. Among Fabricius's students at Padua were the English physician William Harvey, who was a pioneer in the study of blood circulation, and Adriaan van den Spiegel, a Flemish anatomist who was the first to make a thorough study of malaria. In addition to these great medics, Galileo Galilei, the "father of modern astronomy," held the chair of physics at Padua from 1592 to 1610."
