"Nestled in the cliffs above Mawgan Porth bay, this boutique, adults-only eco hotel feels like a remote beach hideaway but is just a 10-minute drive from Newquay Airport or 30 mins from Bodmin station. The vibe is relaxed coastal chic with lots of little rooms and nooks to cosy up with a book, play games, get creative with the art supplies or relax with a drink – local art is dotted everywhere. All of the rooms have seaview balconies or terraces so wherever you are you can fall asleep to the sound of waves. The décor is calming, pale wood and with pops of colour, deep luxurious baths and powerful waterfall showers with toiletries are from Cornish eco brand Oula. Dogs are very welcome and get their own bed, bowls and treats. Complimentary loose-leaf tea, coffee and water is delivered to rooms day and night on request. The Scarlet restaurant has floor to ceiling windows overlooking the Atlantic and a terrace for sunnier days. The menu offers precise, inventive cooking and an emphasis on seafood. On our visit cured local mackerel and monkfish tail with butter masala sauce were particular highlights. There’s also a well priced wine list with some great Cornish bottles from nearby Trevibban Mill and Polgoon. The upstairs bar has snacks and lighter options such as crab linguine as well as some expertly crafted cocktails. Breakfast is a leisurely affair, served until 11am with no need to book. After a selection of caramelised grapefruit, daily cleansing juices, pastries and granola the hot dishes include full Cornish breakfasts, scrambled eggs with cured trout, pancake stacks and smashed avocado sourdough toast. The spa experience The spa area encompasses a sea-facing pool and steam room, outdoor reed-filtered pool, hot tubs and a wooden sauna hut. There’s also a relaxation space and a path down to the beach for swims or sunset walks, plus complimentary yoga, tai chi and mindfulness sessions. Inspired by Ayurvedic principles, the tented, low-lit treatment rooms give a cocoon-like atmosphere for the likes of the PadaMukha massage, a combined face and foot massage using Ayurvedic oils to restore and reenergise. The Scarlet Reset Break offers a bespoke 1-2-1 fitness and lifestyle consultation followed by personalised sessions and post-stay mentoring to stay on track. Also included is a spa treatment and all breakfasts and evening meals.
