"“This place is very San Francisco: light wood, casual service, and lots of people wearing fleece as most do in that part of the world. Still I love eating there on my own while sitting at the bar—especially if I order the salmon crudo and the pasta of the day.” —Mariana Velasquez, food stylist and author of Colombiana: A Rediscovery of Recipes and Rituals from the Soul of Colombia"

"perhaps you’ve heard, Tartine has a way with dough — and the Neapolitan-ish pies incorporate their signature sourdough levain. As for the toppings, the cacio e pepe ($22) is a tomato-less, three-cheese fan favorite, and even Hawaiian pie skeptics will be won over by the pineapple pizza ($24). It features a terrific black garlic tomato sauce the color of mole negro, and the pepperoni cups provide a salty, porky counterpoint to the pineapple."

"É forse la bakery più celebre di San Francisco (nella sua sede originaria di Guerrero Street e in quella più recente, Manufactory, con tanto di laboratorio a vista). Veniteci per colazione, brunch o merenda e non ve ne pentirete."

"This chic and bright former warehouse has a choose-your-own-adventure setup: It touts a bakery (this is Tartine after all), a coffee counter, an ice cream window, and a small wine bar. The rule of thumb here is that there are no wrong choices, whether you’re stopping in for an item from the bakery case (the pain suisse is a must); staying for lunch (in which case, order the coddled eggs, with sea trout roe, fresh horseradish, and za’atar toast; or making it a destination dinner for the fresh-milled durum pappardelle, lamb neck ragu, and ricotta."

"The megabakery-slash-wine-bar-slash-ice-cream-shop-slash-restaurant. GO HERE: Whom are we kidding? You don’t need to be told to go here. If you love bread, sweets, or crispy, salty, herb-stuffed meats and you live anywhere in the vicinity of the Bay Area, chances are you’ve already been. Thankfully, we can all agree that this long-awaited follow-up to Chad Robertson and Liz Prueitt’s Tartine Bakery is everything and more, a temple to their expert craftsmanship of everything from crackly-edged loaves to wheat-free cookies. ORDER THE: coddled egg with za’atar toast for breakfast, out-of-this-planet porchetta sandwich at lunch, and an ice cream pie (from ice-cream-shop-within-a-shop Tartine Cookies & Cream) for the table, no matter what time of day it is. The dinner menu is on your typical farm-to-table rotation, but you’ll want to start with a smørrebrød from the “bread service” menu, with toppings like bottarga and labneh or lardo and strawberries. THE VIBE IS: dreamy—all light wood and sky-high ceilings and Noguchi paper lanterns and custom teal ceramics from Heath. The crowd flow can be tough to navigate, but as soon you find your seat, you’ll want to stay all day. GETTING IN: can be a little bit chaotic. Expect a daytime line (hello, it’s Tartine), and look for a line handler to guide you from the door to the ordering counter. After ordering, find a table, and runners will ferry your order out to you. There are dedicated counters for coffee and bread, so if that’s all you’re there for, skip the main line and go directly inside. To escape a bit of the frenzy, come for an early breakfast or—even better—for dinner, when the restaurant takes reservations."
