The Berkeley : Hôtel, restaurant, bar et afternoon tea à Londres

"👨🏼‍🍳🍋 Cédric Grolet #CNT - $$$ | READERS' CHOICE AWARDS 2017, 2019, 2020 Part of the Maybourne Group, which also manages Claridge's and The Connaught, The Berkeley is a bit like both but not much like either. A child of the early 1970s, there are no heritage trappings; instead, the look is cool, low-key, non-specifically modern. Soothe your aching muscles and achieve a state of serenity at the Blue Bar, or at the health club, home to one of the best spas in London. The views over Hyde Park are excellent; the rooftop pool is itself as pretty as a picture, though too small to be of much use to anyone who actually wants to swim. By way of compensation, there is Andre Fu's 3,000-square-foot Opus Suite—a spectacular space boasting more impressive vistas. Price: Rooms from around $1,182 per night Address: Wilton Pl, London SW1X 7RL Closest tube station: Knightsbridge ———- #CNT - Best for fashion fans: Prêt-à-Portea at The Berkeley, from £80 (around $105) ——————- #CNT - 9. Cédric Grolet's Goûtea at The Berkeley Best for: French flair When French patissier Cédric Grolet chose London as his first outpost outside of France (at Belgravia’s The Berkeley, no less), he brought an exciting wave of sweet innovative concoctions to London's dessert scene. Then he upped the ante by unveiling Goûtea, Grolet’s playful take on British afternoon tea—with a French twist. Set in the golden-hued Berkeley Café, the seasonally-changing menu may not look like much (there are only two small tiers), but come hungry, trust us. It’s recommended to start with the savory dishes and eat your way down to the sweet treats. At Goûtea, finger sandwiches are deliciously elevated—say goodbye to coronation chicken or cucumber with cream cheese and hello to avo-on-toasts and fluffy scrambled egg croissants. Sticking to the Frenchman's roots, classic French pastries such as buttery-flaky croissants and decadent pain Suisse are also on the table. Up next are his signature fruit and flower trompe l’oeil creations—ultra-realistic desserts that are (almost) too pretty to eat. Both delight the eyes and the palate; the lemon is tangy, while the green apple is tart and is paired perfectly with the sweet vanilla flower pastry. No afternoon tea is complete without scones, and the ones here have already come generously slathered with clotted cream and house-made jam. As for teas, you won’t find an endless list of artisanal blends. Instead, only essentials are available: black, mint, green, matcha, and chai teas. However, the lavender-infused latte is a must-try. Zahra Surya Darma Address: The Berkeley, Wilton Place, London SW1X 7RL Website: the-berkeley.co.uk Price: £85 per person (around $111) —————— Best for: fashion fans The Berkeley's afternoon tea offering gets the award for the most fashionable in London. The crowd here is well-heeled—I lost count of the Manolo Blahnik Hangisi heels I saw. It’s not a coincidence either—Prêt-à-Portea has been drawing fashion fans for years with its edible edit of the hottest ready-to-wear shows. Each season, the head pastry chef has the dream job of taking inspiration from the latest runway shows and recreating them in sweet form. Khia teams his incredible eye for patterns, sculptural shapes, and signature items with his talent for innovative textures and flavors. The six-month revolving menu inevitably ends up as a ‘greatest hits’ of the latest fashion trends, featuring accessories or motifs from all the top designers—Spring/Summer featured Hermès, Loewe, and Zimmermann—served in delicious and dainty edible treats. In previous years, some of fashion’s great icons have also been served, most famously Anna Wintour, complete with signature bob and sunglasses, in biscuit form. Seeing these edible works of art is a treat; eating them is a delicious adventure. If you’re a traditionalist, be warned that while there are the usual canapés and sandwiches, there are no scones. Tea is taken seriously, though, with a page on the menu dedicated to the scientific process of how the Berkeley makes its tea. Champagne is also on offer, plus a seasonal and refreshing mocktail. But really, this one is all about fashion, both in person and on the plate. Lauren Burvill Address: Wilton Place, London SW1X 7RL Website: the-berkeley.co.uk Price: £80 per person (around $105)"

"Afternoon tea is always in fashion at The Berkeley, where pastry chef and artistic genius Mourad Khiat puts together delicately composed sweet treats based on catwalks from around the globe. This season’s creations include a vanilla mousse with a fruit tulle skirt inspired by a Versace gown; a Prada handbag reimagined as a cinnamon blondie; and a delicately hand-iced biscuit resembling Victoria Beckham’s trophy jacket for AW’23. Details: Served daily 1-5.30pm | £100pp including mulled wine or a glass of Champagne | Vegetarian menu available "

"Grace Dent recommended the snug bar"

@judithaw

"Behind its sandstone façade, The Berkeley has long attracted well-heeled, well-dressed clients from the overlapping worlds of business and fashion. There’s a wildly popular couture-themed afternoon tea, and the Lutyens-inspired Blue Bar positively throbs every evening (and mixes top-notch cocktails). In late 2016, the hotel’s dignified but bland 1970s face was given a startling lift by one of the world’s most prominent architects, Richard Rogers of Pompidou Center fame. For some, the glass and steel canopied entrance may evoke an airport, but it leads to beautified public areas, bars, and cafés that are more spacious and inviting than ever, thanks to the designer Robert Angell. The Berkeley’s rooms—including vast suites with Hyde-Park-view terraces —have been re-thought too, and not with a mere coat of paint and some new furniture. The architect John Heah has already made his mark on a number of rooms, achieving calm elegance with a witty use of geometric themes (such as variations on the meeting of rectangles and circles), fine materials, and muted colors. But what remains untouched is part of what makes The Berkeley special: the glorious rooftop swimming pool (open to the sky on nice days), the ultra-relaxing Bamford Haybarn spa, and Marcus Wareing’s fine two-Michelin-star restaurant. Also unchanged are the environs, across the street from Hyde Park and a few minutes’ walk from the shopping bazaar that is Knightsbridge."

"Restaurant - We’re about 90% sure that Cedric Grolet is secretly a wizard who merely moonlights as a pastry chef. After all, at his bakery in Paris he specialises in creating pastries that look exactly like real fruits, with a sweet (sometimes surprising) filling encased in a perfect, cake-like shell. Each photo he drops seems to score around a 10.0 on the Instagram Richter Scale, and if you didn’t know better, you’d be forgiven for thinking those fruits were the real thing. Frankly, some black magic has to be involved. And now he’s coming to London to open his first international outpost, at Mayfair’s Berkeley hotel... https://www.the-berkeley.co.uk/whats-new/cedric-grolet-the-berkeley/"
